Nancy's List of Denver Relocation and Moving Tips

Get organized.
Buy a small notebook, one you can fit in your pocket or purse. Use it to keep all your notes on the move in one place. When you think of something you need to do, write it down. Every day, go over your notes. I recommend making a 5-part Moving Binder (get this at any office supply store) that you may divide into sections for easy access to important info.
- New Home Purchase Paperwork (copy)
- Moving Company Quote and itemized list of your possessions taken on day movers pack the truck
- Important Contact Numbers: Your Realtor; Nancy Somberg 303-551-5412, Utility Companies, Tele. Number of Moving Company, telephone numbers of friends or contacts in your new city
Find out as much as you can about your new city.
See Helpful Web Links, or call/e-mail Encore Properties for any specific information you need; nsomberg@encoreproperties.com or call 303-551-5412 for Further Assistance.
Have the local newspaper sent to you.
It will give you the "flavor" of the area and you can find out what's happening before you move. The classified section is also a good source for services you might need. See the papers web sites ?
The Denver Post call 303-234-0016 for a free 60-day subscription to the Denver Post
Encore Properties provides each of its relocation clients with a Complimentary one-year Subscription to
Denver's 5280 Magazine.
Start networking.Get in touch with anyone you ever knew who lived in your new city and ask lots of questions.
If you belong to any national organizations, ask if there are local chapters in your new destination.
Gather your medical and dental records.Ask your doctors for recommendations in your new community.
Travel light.Don't move things you?ll have little use for at your new location. Prepare your belongings by sorting through them before the move. Sort everything into one of three categories: sell, donate or save. Be merciless! Have a garage sale and save the proceeds to buy new furniture, linens or accessories at the new location. Let the children sort their own toys and give them the profits from any sold. Arrange for a charitable organization to pick up the unsold items and write off the donations on you taxes.
Last load boxes.
Be sure to have one special box for every family member. The general box should include change of clothes, linens, towels, alarm clock, medications, toiletries, 2 rolls of toilet paper, first aid kit, household/kitchen supplies, tools, light bulbs and snacks. Give each family member an empty box with their name and the words "LAST LOAD" written on it. In the weeks before the move, they can put into it those things they want to have when they arrive at the new home.
Make a Kids Bag to carry games, books, snacks and items that will keep the children amused and happy while you make the cross country drive if traveling by car.
Hand carry all important papers.Empty your safety deposit box. Take valuables such as jewelry or collections with you.
Living A Mile High
Denver is known as the "Mile High City" and living at a mile above sea level means your body must make some adjustments to function normally. It is not unusual for people coming to Denver from a lower altitude to experience light-headedness, dizziness, nausea, headaches, insomnia, nose bleeds, sun burns and dry skin. To make your trip here a pleasant experience begin to follow the steps given below a couple of days before coming to Denver and during the time you are here:
- Drink twice as much water as you do at homeminimum of one gallon of water a day!
- Decrease salt intake
- Moderate your physical activity - especially the first few days of the trip.
- Eat high carbohydrate and low fat meals
- Eliminate alcohol and reduce caffeine intake. Having one alcoholic drink in Denver is like three drinks at sea level!
- If you continue to feel sick do not hesitate to seek medical help!
- Always use sunscreen. (SPF 30+)
- Wear sun glasses.
- Bring extra clothes for sudden temperature changes.
- Use body lotion liberally!
Once you become acclimated to this altitude-usually within two weeks- you will begin to appreciate the benefits-like feeling warm on sunny days when the temperature is only 30 degrees; incredibly clear, blue skies; snow that melts the next day; being able to see all the way to Colorado Springs; cool summer nights with few bugs, living in the majesty of purple mountains...
